About Harvey Castro

I am a documentary photographer and multidisciplinary artist exploring the intersections of community, climate change, migration, and identity. My journey—from fleeing Nicaragua's war-torn landscape as a child to a 20-year career in operations and software management before dedicating myself to photography in 2018—deeply informs my practice. Those early experiences of displacement and resilience shaped my perspective and continue to inspire my work today.

Photography, for me, is both disruption and connection. My projects begin with building relationships and uncovering the deeper narratives at play within communities. I use a variety of media—still and moving images, audio recordings, and alternative processes like cyanotypes on fabric. Materials such as cochinilla and coffee for toning connect my work to histories of exploitation and resilience within the communities I document.

Through installations like Cuerpo Substancia Extendida at the Museo Morelense de Arte Contemporáneo and Esa Sombra eres Tú at Koik Contemporary, I create immersive environments that challenge traditional representations and explore subjective dimensions of identity, community, and transformation. I transform institutional spaces into sites of encounter and reflection using translucent fabrics, layered images, and environmental elements. Each installation is conceived as a complete environment where viewers engage physically and emotionally with the narratives presented.

As a California Creative Corps Fellow, I developed Reclaiming Home, a collaborative project examining community bonds and identity through environmental portraiture and custom-made frames crafted by the participants. This project exemplifies my commitment to using art as a tool for social change and representation.

My work also explores the nuanced stories of communities navigating challenging landscapes, from the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico to the algal blooms and drought impacts threatening Oakland's Lake Merritt. At its core, my practice is about bearing witness—honoring the stories of those resilient in the face of climate change, migration, and systemic challenges.

Based in Oakland and Mexico City, my work has been recognized with the Center Santa Fe Excellence in Multimedia Storytelling Award (2023). I am an alumnus of the Eddie Adams Workshop XXXVII and continue to create layered narratives that invite viewers to recognize themselves in stories that may seem far removed from their own lives.
